Environmental Design
Our landscape architecture team work closely with our ecologists, water resource engineers and civil engineers to implement recreated natural open spaces, filter marshes and rain gardens. These ‘natural’ areas become alternative methods of water storage and treatment while providing habitat for critters native to Florida. Beyond grading, hydrology and planting design, our projects are great examples of how landscape architects are able to join our design knowledge and innovative thinking with that of other in-house Johnson Engineering market groups to offer our clients coordinated, multidiscipline services from one source.
Commercial Design
The goal of any commercial development is to keep the consumer coming back. We work hard to provide the customer with an experience that is comfortable while still being convenient and efficient. The role of landscape design, as it pertains to commercial properties, is not just to beautify the site, but also to lower the urban heat island by providing tree canopy and other vegetation which softens the urban fabric woven with concrete and asphalt. Good commercial design provides the landscape architect with an opportunity to introduce natural materials into the built environment.
Park Planning
Green spaces in developed areas provide substantial environmental benefits as well as opportunities for social interaction along with physical and mental fitness through recreation and relaxation. Trees, shrubs, and open space reduce air and water pollution, help keep areas cooler, and are a more effective and less expensive way to manage stormwater runoff than traditional systems of concrete sewers and drainage ditches. Parks also produce important social and community development benefits. Access to public parks and recreational facilities has been strongly linked to reductions in crime, particularly among juveniles. Community gardens and parks increase residents’ sense of community ownership and stewardship, provide a focus for neighborhood activities, connect people from diverse cultures, and build community leaders.
Graphic Design
Our landscape architecture team takes great pride in our graphic capabilities. We are proficient in hand graphics as well as numerous types of computer assisted graphics including project site plans, views and renderings. We have produced full 3-D modeling and animations that take our clients on a virtual tour through their final project. These images help paint the picture of our client’s vision and in many instances are used by clients to assist in marketing their end product.
Community Design
Successful community design follows a fundamental principle of landscape architecture: blending mankind into the natural and built environment. At Johnson Engineering we focus on sustainable design. Using our corporate-wide expertise, we strive to protect our natural resources and incorporate them into the fabric of our designs as an amenity and basis for sustainability. Our experience in site planning, ecology, water resource management, community identity elements, and marketing packages are all key to successful community building.
Streetscape Design
Our team has years of experience in the design and implementation of many miles of highway landscape beautification projects within Florida. We have established strong working relationships with the local and state municipalities we have served, as well as the landscape and irrigation contractors with which we have worked. These relationships together, with concerns for safety and aesthetics, have been the key to the success of our beautification work within these public corridors.
Construction Observation
Our team has the knowledge and background to provide construction administration and observation services for our landscape architecture projects. Trained and experienced professionals visit the project site during construction to review progress, quality of materials, workmanship, and compliance with construction documents. These site visits result in successfully built projects that meet the vision of our clients. We also assists administratively by reviewing bidder qualifications, bids, change orders, pay applications, project schedules, and much more. Oversight of all documents assists in keeping a project on time and within budget.
Planting & Irrigation Design
While irrigation is not a necessity in many places, it is a requirement in the State of Florida as most local agencies require permanent, or at least temporary, irrigation to guarantee the survivability of most new plantings. We have extensive expertise in the use of both xeriscape and Florida friendly planting design techniques, supported by training from the Irrigation Association (ISA), in irrigation design and construction observation. A properly installed planting design and irrigation system not only creates healthy plants, but also saves money and has proven to be invaluable during drought seasons. Our design team works closely with manufacturers of all irrigation components to ensure that every project is provided with the best and most efficient design.
